Green Ship Recycling

Recycling of obsolete seagoing vessels for the production of steel is by definition an environmentally friendly (‘green') activity with a far superior environmental performance given its high production energy efficiency, the associated reduction in emissions from subsequent processing, and the preservation of non-renewable resources (Green Growth). Unfortunately despite the existence of hundreds of dismantling yards around the world their lack of understanding of the basic principles of safe and sound industrial practices, their low-level equipment and non-existent experience, and the weak national regulatory frameworks regarding worker health & safety and the environment lead them to cause incorrigible damage to their workers and the environment.

Turkey is the only OECD country with a major ship recycling industry, employing western standards for the safe and environmentally sound recycling of obsolete seagoing vessels. Turkey has made significant steps towards harmonizing its legislation with relevant EC Directives towards Turkey’s preparations for EU membership. More specifically, and in relation to waste management, all the requirements and provisions of the Council Directive 91/689/EEC on hazardous waste have been introduced into the Turkish national legislation related to hazardous waste management (BLHWC). Moreover, Turkey being an OECD country is considered equivalent to all EU countries regarding the transboundary movement of hazardous materials that may be present on board older ships, namely European Regulation (EC) No 1013/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 June 2006 on shipments of waste (the transposition of the Basel Convention into EC law).
